DaVinci Resolve — App Basics

Where things live in Resolve, the shortcuts and Inspector basics you'll use every session, and our export standard. For color grading specifics, see the dedicated Color page.

The workspace

The 7 pages, left to right

Resolve splits work into pages, selected from icons along the bottom of the app. You move left to right roughly in editing order.

Media

Import and organize footage — browse clips, add metadata and keywords, sync double-system audio. First stop for anything new.

Cut

A fast, stripped-down timeline for a quick rough assembly. Handy, but most of our teams work in Edit instead.

Edit — main workspace

The full timeline: trimming, multi-track arranging, transitions, titles, effects. Where most of the session happens.

Fusion

Node-based compositing and motion graphics — animated lower-thirds, green screen, effects beyond the Edit page's toolset.

Color

Grading — see the dedicated Color page for the full workflow, wheels, scopes, and nodes.

Fairlight

Full audio mixing — levels, EQ, noise reduction. Where to clean up room noise or balance a mic against music.

These hold across Resolve's default keyboard map because they're industry-standard editing conventions, not Resolve-specific bindings.

Heads up — Resolve has switchable keyboard mapping presets (Preferences → Keyboard Customization: Resolve, Final Cut 7, Premiere Pro). If a key does something unexpected, check which mapping is active before assuming it's broken.

Inspector basics for a video clip

Click any clip on the timeline and the Inspector (top right) shows its properties as a stack of collapsible sections. For a plain video clip, these are the ones you'll actually touch.

Color Grading, at a Glance

A working reference for volunteer editors — the order to grade in, how to read the wheels and scopes, and what to watch for in worship footage vs. interview footage. Bookmark this page. For the rest of the app, see the Basics page.

Order of operations

Grade in this order — don't skip ahead

Every step builds on the one before it. Grading a "look" before the exposure is balanced means redoing the look later.

Add CST In and CST Out

Bookend the chain first — a CST node at the very start and another at the very end. Everything else in this list happens between them.

Adjust exposure and shape the contrast

Bring exposure into range, then use Lift / Gamma / Gain (or Shadows / Midtones / Highlights) to add punch — lift the blacks slightly, carve the mids, protect the highlights. Use the Waveform to keep blacks near 0% and whites near 100%.

White balance

Use the Vectorscope to check for a color cast — a neutral shot should sit near the center.

Isolate and fix problem spots

Add a parallel node or a Power Window for anything local — one blown-out stage light, an uneven face, a green exit sign in frame. Don't let a spot-fix touch the rest of the image.

Apply the house look / LUT

Add this at the end of the chain, after the shot is already balanced — a LUT applied first will fight your other corrections. See Our house look.

Final pass, then re-check scopes

Small saturation/vignette tweaks last. Before moving on, glance at the scopes one more time — the "final" look can quietly clip or crush what you balanced earlier.

Primary controls

Color wheels: which one controls what

Three wheels, three zones of the image. Newer Resolve versions label them Shadows / Midtones / Highlights — same tool, friendlier name.

Darkest part of the image. Push down for depth, up to reveal shadow detail.
Gamma
Midtones
Where skin tones and most of the frame lives. The biggest visual impact of the three.

Highlights
Brightest part of the image. Easy to clip — watch the Waveform, not just your eyes.

Trust the scopes, not the screen

Reading the two scopes you'll use most

Every monitor and laptop screen displays color a little differently. Scopes show you the actual signal. Open them from the button in the top-right of the Color page — laid out as a 2×2 grid like below.

Same signal, split into R / G / B side-by-side — catches a color cast hiding in one channel that an overlapped waveform can mask.

Overall brightness (luma) across the frame, 0–1023. Keep highlights out of the amber clip zone and shadows off the floor unless it's meant to be dark.

VECTORSCOPE

Color as angle (hue) and distance from center (saturation). Real skin tones — any skin tone — fall near the dashed line, sitting between Yellow and Red, closer to Red.

Distribution of pixel values per channel — a quick read on whether the image is flat, contrasty, crushed in the shadows, or clipping in the highlights.

Serial vs. parallel nodes

Never pile every correction onto one node — split them up so you can adjust or turn off one thing later without redoing the grade.

Each node feeds the next. Corrections stack in order — good for the main balance-then-look chain in the workflow above.

Branches apply independently, then recombine — use it to fix one thing (a stage light, one bad qualifier) without touching the rest of the chain.

Final creative look
CST = Color Space Transform. It converts the camera's log footage into a working color space at the front of the chain, and converts back out to the delivery space at the end — everything creative happens in between.
Context matters

What to watch for, by footage type

Worship / stage footage

  • Mixed lighting (LED wash + haze + spotlights) throws off auto white balance — trust the vectorscope's skin tone line over the "feel" of the shot.
  • Colored stage lights clip easily — check the waveform on wide/saturated colors, not just skin.
  • Low light = more noise. Don't over-push shadows or gain; noise blooms fast.
  • Use a Power Window on the subject's face if the wash behind them is a strong color — isolate, don't globally correct.

Interview / b-roll

  • Usually cleaner, more controlled light — prioritize accurate, consistent skin tone across every setup.
  • If guests were shot in different rooms or on different days, match them to each other before applying the house look.
  • Backgrounds are often simpler — an easy place to double check for a color cast the eye misses on faces.

Common mistakes

Grading the "look" before balancing exposureEverything downstream has to be redone once the base exposure changes.
Judging color by eye on an uncalibrated laptop screenScreens vary a lot — the scopes show the real signal every time.
Stacking every correction on one nodeMakes it hard to isolate or undo a single fix later. Split by purpose.
Skipping a saved still for the reference lookWithout one, every editor's "close enough" drifts a little differently.
Applying the house LUT first, then balancing on top of itThe LUT's own contrast fights the correction. Balance first, LUT last.
